Natural Products extraction process

At Footprint Biotechnologies we use the Blue-Green Algae Arthrospira platensis which also known as Spirulina for the production and extraction of the natural pigment Phycocyanin.

Raceways

Raceways technology is used for the large scale production of our spirulina biomass.

The pond is divided into a rectangular grid, with each rectangle containing one channel in the shape of an oval, similarly to an automotive raceway circuit.

Each rectangle contains a paddle wheel to make the water flow continuously around the circuit.

Membrane Technology

Membrane Filtration technology is one of the most advanced methods for microalgae biomass harvest and concentration.

The use of this system increases process performance, reduces costs, saves energy and water and can create new sustainable revenue streams from By-products.

Drying Process

After harvesting and concentration, the Spirulina biomass is dried using non-intensive technology.

For storage and preventing losing the nutritional quality, Arthrospira is dried till water content is reduced to the minimum.

Convective drying is used to obtain thin plates or cylinders.

Ultrafiltration

We obtain food-grade quality Phycocyanin Pigments through an extraction process which employs ultrafiltration technology.

The purity of Phycocyanin is the key factor for its application in the food, pharmaceutical and medical industries.

The purification processes we have adopted achieves food-grade purity.

Premium Biotechnological products

The organic products are supplied in different formats: as dried powder, this plates or cylinders, pigments or soluble.

Dried Spirulina 

Following the drying process, Spirulina biomass is supplied as dried powder delivering a source of nutrients for human and animal consumption.

Soluble Phycocyanin

We obtain soluble Phycocyanin and food grade quality Phycocyanin Pigments through an extraction process using ultrafiltration technology.

Dry and soluble Phycoerythrin

The same production and ultrafiltration extraction process is used  to extract the natural pigment Phycoerythrin in dry and soluble format.
